The Adaptation Workbook provides a structured approach for integrating climate change considerations into management planning and activities. Using this approach for project planning at Laguna Mt., participants will:
- Consider climate change impacts and vulnerabilities specific to the project area, and how those might affect the ability to meet project goals and objectives.
- Identify adaptation actions that help address climate vulnerabilities while meeting goals and objectives.
- Discuss how to monitor adaptation actions for success.
Workshop dates and purpose
This workshop will take place over two separate meeting dates. Please find the latest agenda here. A simplified summary of each session follows:
Session 1 - October 18th, 1-4p PT: Consider climate change impacts and vulnerabilities specific to the CNF and the Laguna Mt. project area, and how those might affect the ability to meet project goals and objectives.
Session 2 - October 21st, 1-4p PT: Identify and refine adaptation actions that help address climate vulnerabilities while meeting project goals and objectives. Determine ways to monitor adaptation actions for success.
Pre-work
We ask that all participants set aside some time to complete the following pre-work prior to attending the workshop:
Prior to Session 1:
- Review the Laguna Mt. Project goals and objectives.
- Please set aside ~ 30 minutes to read and/or skim the following information on climate impacts and vulnerabilities:
- Read the summary of the Southern California Montane Forests Threat Assessment;
- Skim the summary of current & future trends in climate for the Cleveland National Forest;
- Skim the EcoAdapt Southern California Climate Adaptation Project for climate and vulnerability information for your ecosystems or area of expertise;
Prior to Session 2:
- Look through the Adaptation Strategies and Approaches menus, particularly the California Adaptation Menu, and the Fire-Adapted Ecosystems Menu
- Read the Laguna Forest Health Resilience Measures Review and Recommendations
- Watch an overview of climate adaptation concepts (~20 min video presentation)
This workshop is hosted by the USFS Region 5 and the Cleveland National Forest and facilitated by the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science. It is supported by many partners including the USDA California Climate Hub.
